Peer Work for our Buddies

Peer Work for our Buddies

Buddy Up Australia is excited to welcome our first Vocational Placement student to expand our Peer Support capability. Peter Nisbet (Brisbane Chapter member of Buddy Up Australia) is undertaking a Certificate IV in Mental Health Peer Work with TAFE Queensland. This qualification is specifically designed for people who have a lived experience of mental illness to aid people in their own journey of recovery.

Peter is a Veteran of five years service in the Australian Army from 1998 – 2003.  Following a service-related incident that led to an early exit, he transitioned into the Public Service. This included a wide variety of policy, project, and program operational roles in various states.

As a committed service-orientated person, Peter has been working and volunteering with a number of organisations to help make a difference to our community. Most recently, with Veteran Sport Australia and the Australian Red Cross and all whilst looking after his own mental health issues, along his path to recovery.

Peter comes to Buddy Up Australia as an Accredited Mental Health First Aider. He has undertaken several courses in this area including the Living Works Australia ‘Operation Life: safeTALK Suicide Prevention Awareness’ with Open Arms, the two-day ‘Solutions Focused Approach to Suicide Prevention’ and the two-day ‘Solution Focused Combat Operational Stress Recovery’ courses offered by the Veteran Wellbeing Summit 2020.

During his placement, Peter will be focusing on providing online peer support with our Chapter Leaders and Buddy Up Australia members who are undertaking the Diploma of Counselling. He will also provide face-to-face peer support with individual SEQLD members. Peter will also deliver some Mental Health training, in conjunction with ACA.

Buddy Up Australia is keen to see how this ‘Mental Health Peer Worker model’ develops so that we can further support our veteran and first responder community as well as their immediate families. After all, we’re all about buddies helping each other stay in the well zone of mental health so it’s a perfect fit!
